Limbah cair dari industri kelapa sawit yang tidak diolah dengan tepat akan menyebabkan timbulnya bau tak sedap pada badan air karena tingginya kandungan bahan organik, minyak dan lemak, dan padatan total tersuspensi. Penelitian ini bertujuan merancang unit pengolahan limbah cair industri minyak kelapa sawit agar sesuai baku mutu Permen LHK RI No 5 Tahun 2014. Karakteristik air limbah kelapa sawit adalah pH 4,2, minyak dan lemak 4.000 mg/L, BOD 278 mg/L, COD 620 mg/L, TSS 18 mg/L, dan Total Nitrogen 750 mg/L. Pengolahan air limbah dapat dilakukan menggunakan teknologi secara fisik, kimia maupun biologis. Unit pengolahan dari industri kelapa sawit terdiri atas sumur pengumpul dan bar screen, grit chamber vortex, grease trap, dissolved air flotation (DAF), netralisasi, koagulasi, flokulasi, bak ekualisasi, sequencing batch reactor (SBR), desinfeksi, sludge drying bed (SDB). Perhitungan neraca massa dari pengolahan di setiap unit menjadi faktor penting agar dapat mengetahui aliran massa semua beban pencemar yang masuk dan keluar tiap unit pengolahan.
